Hilltop’s annual Hilltop 4th
of July brunch and meeting took place at Veronica and Gustavo’s carport (11029)
– the perfect location. We had a very good turnout representing 19 households
including 30 Hilltop adults, plus one former resident, visiting family members,
and kids.
We didn’t organize a
bike/stroller parade this year because we thought there were not enough kids,
but in retrospect we could have done so. There were enough visiting grandkids to
have made it a success. Next year!
President Ron opened the
meeting and thanked Veronica and Gustavo for their generosity in allowing our
community’s 4th of July get-together to continue its tradition in
their carport. He thanked Lynette, Hilltop’s Social Committee Chair, (and her
kids, Theodore and Cosette, who helped!) for arranging everything. They also
placed beautiful US flags along the entire street. The food was delicious, as
always.
The first item on the agenda
was the election of officers (President, Treasurer, and Secretary) to serve for
the next two years. Ron said that the current officers had agreed to serve
another two years, if re-elected, however nominations were welcome and open to
all. No nominations were forthcoming and the current officers were re-elected.
Lynette Melcher has served
for the previous four years as Social Committee Chair and has done a magnificent
job. It is she who planned this wonderful brunch! She finds that she must now
turn this over to someone else as her work responsibilities have increased. Ron
stated that Carol Leahy, who is the current Helping Hands Committee Chair and
had previously been the Social Committee Chair, has agreed to take over this
responsibility. The new Social Committee will incorporate Helping Hands into its
scope. Carol will form a committee and anyone interested in working with her
should give her a call.
The other committee chairs
(Carol Simon, Landscaping; Glenn Melcher, County Liaison; and Lance Optican,
Webmaster) have also agreed to continue in these roles.
Each of the current officers
and committee chairs was thanked individually by various members of the
community for their service to the community.
Ron presented a thorough
report on the expected changes at the Cabin John Shopping Center which was sold
last December to Edens, a retail developer and operator, by the Carl Freeman
Cos. for $165m. The current development contains over 200,000 sq. ft. and
potentially could expand by a lot. Currently two new buildings are planned to be
built at the south-west corner of the property. This summer there is a farmer’s
market in that location on Thursday afternoons which probably will be moved to
the rear of the property.
Major changes to the
intersection at Seven Locks Rd. and Tuckerman Lane will begin in August and
should last about six months. When finished, there will be two northbound lanes
and two eastbound lanes through the intersection. Since there is not enough room
to expand Seven Locks Road to the east, the expansion will take place on the
west side of the road. (Yea!)
Ron announced that we have new neighbors – as of 3 days ago! A lovely family of five has moved to 11033 from Georgia. They are: Alex and Catherine (“Cat”) with their children, Corwin, Keaton, and Ellie, and two doggies. Unfortunately they could not come to the brunch as they had made previous plans with relatives who live in the area.
It is possible that the
annual dues (currently $150) can be lowered in 2018.
The roof of the gazebo was
rebuilt successfully last year by Dan Q. with Ron R’s assistance. The new
plantings from last summer survived the winter and are doing well. Oscar and Dan
continue to maintain the grass cutting and gardening on the hill under Carol
S.’s direction.
Lance encouraged everyone to
check our Hilltop website at
www.HilltopUpdater.net
Send him any pictures or notices you would like the community to see.
There will be several updates in the near future, such as these minutes (under
the Business tab) and photos from the brunch.
We hope there will be a
volunteer to host the winter party/meeting in their home in January. It is not
too early to plan for this! Please get in touch with Carol Leahy if you are
willing to do this. It really is easy: you just open your front door to let
everybody in. The Social Committee sets up and cleans up, and everybody brings
food. Also, the host usually gets to keep some yummy leftovers!
Next summer will mark the 50th
year anniversary of our community!!!
Nine (of 32) original residents are still here! We will plan something NICE to
celebrate.
